Securing a spot on the first page of Google for your selected search terms is one of the most coveted goals in online marketing. You might be asking why this is the case. Let me show you a few statistics:
- According to MarketingCharts, over 39% of customers come from searches.
- 75% of users never scroll past the first page of search results.
One of the main ways to get your business to show up on Google is through Organic SEO.
What is Organic SEO?
Webopedia defines SEO as the following:
Organic SEO (search engine optimization) is the phrase used to describe processes to obtain a natural placement on organic search engine results pages (SERPs).
What this means is that instead of buying online pay-per-click ads or Google AdWords, your website shows up in Google searches based on what Google has determined your site should be found for. This can build over time as your site is updated and content is edited. Google likes to see sites that are updated and maintained and indexes them more favorably over sites that are static. A few statistics:
- 70% of the links search users click on are organic.
- 70-80% of users ignore the paid ads, focusing on the organic results.
Content Is Key
Google’s search algorithms are content-driven, meaning Google analyzes your website’s content in order to determine what it should index for. Your content should be engaging, easy to read, and most importantly, relate to the page that it’s on. For example, if your page is titled TRUCKS and you are posting information about minivans, you will not rank as high in searches for trucks. Content and titles must be consistent. This also applies to your site in general. If your business is selling trucks, but you have a lot of information about minivans, your site won’t rank as highly for either because Google will have a harder time figuring out what to index. In short, the content needs to be well-written, informative, and on-topic.
At this point, you are really doing your business a disservice by not using Organic SEO to your advantage. With as many competitors as are online today, getting eyeballs on your site is vital!
